What a brush is made of

The thickness and shape of the stroke are controlled by rotating and tilting. Selection criteria

   When buying a flat brush, consider the main features:

• Ferrule diameter. It determines the density of the bristles and the amount of paint that can be picked up at once.
• Width of the flattened end of the ferrule. The larger it is, the easier it is to depict large-scale objects on the painting.
• Bristle reach. This is the length of the bristles that remains free from the edge of the ferrule and is used during painting.
• This group includes so-called contour brushes. They include products with a small bristle reach. Short bristles provide the springiness needed to make high-quality straight-line strokes to emphasize contours on graphic canvases or to create smooth color transitions.

   If the end of the hair tuft is cut on both sides to obtain a sharp or oval tip, such a brush is called a “cat’s tongue.” With this universal tool (by changing pressure, its position, and the angle of inclination) it is easy to make strokes typical of both round and flat brushes.
