Whatman paper

Watman paper - the history of its invention

Not everyone knows that “watman” is named after the surname of its inventor, James Watt, who lived in Britain in the first half of the 18th century. The factory that James built for producing high-quality paper was incredibly successful. Some of the secrets of the Watman paper-making technology are still unknown today. Thanks to a careful approach to the production process, it was possible to achieve a unique level of quality and paper density for that time. Nobody could have imagined that Watt’s invention would remain relevant and necessary for work even three centuries later.

Watman paper is especially popular in creative, artistic circles and is often used as drawing paper. Today you can buy watman paper in practically every city in the world—for example, in Kyiv or Odesa. Of course, back then watman was made by hand, while now the process is automated, but the principle and purpose of production have not changed.

Main characteristics

Watman paper is commonly referred to as thick paper used for drawing with a pencil, pen, quill, or ink, as well as for creating images with different types of paint. In fact, “watman” is a name of the production technology, and applying the term to paper is simply more convenient for people. Paper made using this technology is resistant to erasing; with careful use of an eraser, its structure is almost not worn away. It has no pronounced texture.

Watman paper may have different densities (170–200 g/m2): the higher the value, the less likely it is to be accidentally crumpled and damage the structure. Formats also differ. Sheets of A3 and A4 watman are ideal for educational drawings; in terms of size they are convenient for both school students and university students. For drawing, creating posters, and complex large-scale models or drawings, larger formats—A2, A1, and A0—are better suited. You can buy watman paper in any required format in the Paley stationery online store at very affordable prices.
